THE PROBLEM
A politically driven board that illegally targeted staff, cut student services based on sexuality, eliminated all district librarians claiming false budgetary constraints, exhibits favoritism toward campaign donors who also provided district services, running fake candidates against opponents, sending misleading campaign literature to confuse voters, and raised collectively $116,576.02 (Jim Kelly, Rob Shield, and Gary Woods) to obtain their seats in 2022 when such races average $3,000 to $5,000 per candidate – what exactly is going on?
THE THEORY
The current board majority reflects a narrow worldview that doesn’t represent our full community. It is divisive, exclusive, and unwarranted in a public school district.
THE SOLUTION
Vote them out – they have held these seats long enough and these should not be lifetime appointments; it is time for new ideas and new voices to take the reigns.
Return Librarians to the District – as a past district parent, my one complaint was no library access before or after school for either of my children (my personal preference is two per school to cover both the early mornings and the late afternoons with dual coverage in the middle of the day).
Restore the District’s ties to San Diego Youth Services – a public school district should never ignore student needs or concerns relating to gender identity or sexual preference; it should meet the needs of all students equally.
Strengthen Teacher on Assignment programs using experienced existing educators approaching retirement to partner with new, or struggling educators, for active on-site classroom assistance to both retain and empower new teachers.
Implement the District’s ethnic studies curriculum which was internally created over roughly three years by our educators to be used with little prep time and includes teacher resources; understanding culture and history matters especially for the students who are asking to be more informed.
Become competitive by strengthening our extra curricular programming through the arts, technology, and sports; declining enrollment can be reversed by attracting the students who already live here to attend here .
Improve existing spaces -- GUHSD has seen a ton of upgrades and progress through bond measures but there are still crucial fixes that need to be addressed. I see you LoPrell! East County gets hot. Working AC units, as an example, are a crucial tool in the education process. We cannot expect our students and staff to academically thrive when they are sticking to their desks.
IN CLOSING
As a Christian and former youth pastor, I say this with confidence: I don’t impose my faith on others – I live it through my actions. I believe my opponent, Dr. Gary Woods, is serving in a non-partisan position while making right-leaning partisan policies in public schools that I believe weaken our district and further divide our community. I humbly ask for your vote this election season. I promise to foster a culture of fair and equal representation in which students and staff can thrive.
